Pe Htaw Bhut Htamin (Butter and Lentil Rice)

  • 1 cup basmati rice, rinsed and drained
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup split dried chana dal, soaked for 8 hours
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 2/3 cup water
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 cinnamon stick


  1. Rinse the basmati rice until the water runs clear. Put the rice in a pot and layer the soaked dal on top. Add the remaining ingredients and the water.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and cover. Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes or until all the water has been absorbed.
  3. Let rest for five minutes before serving.
