Refried Beans

Makes: 6 to 8 servings


  • 1 3/4 lb canned red kidney beans
  • 2 tbsp ground cumin
  • 6 tbsp oil (canola or sunflower)
  • 2 tbsp chopped onion
  • 2 tbsp chopped green bell pepper
  • 4 garlic cloves, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste


  1. Pour the beans and liquid into your blender. Pulse until mostly a paste with a few whole beans remaining.
  2. Meanwhile, heat a small amount of oil in a large pot and add the onions, peppers and garlic. Cook until the onions are translucent.
  3. Add the beans and stir in the cumin.
  4. Reduce heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the beans thicken.
